Ive been dying my hair for years and years due to inherited early grey growth.
My hair started showing grey at the age of 15 so as i had blond streaks it didnt notice but as i grew up i had a burgany red which i loved. About a year ago i went natrual dark brown again i liked as im getting older now (33).
Ive found the time scale inbetween dying is getting shorter all the time as the grey is coming faster and more of it too.
So i fancied going red again for a change but i cannot find a hair dye that actually covers the grey with that colour, it all ways colours it orange.
Im grey just at my routes and abit around the temples.
Is there a product that actually colours the grey with the colour wanted.
No wise cracks thankyou...
Hairdressing question about hair dye?
Hello, well there are a few options, first one of course is to see a professional stylist at least for the first time you change your hair color, for a few different reasons, first off, you have 2 different kinds of hair on your head and 2 different things you want to do. You have brown hair that you want to make red (not always an easy task depending on what kind of color you have been using) and you have new gray hair growing in that you want to color red and make sure it stays that way. This is a multi-step process and can't be done in one fell swoop.
But if you really have to do this at home, this is what I would suggest, I would gradually change your color by mixing the brown you already use with the red you want, and just color the roots. To help the color cover the gray better, start applying the color to the grayest part of your hair first, leave on for 10 mins then apply to the rest of your hair as normal, the other thing you can do is leave the color on a little longer. Try 10 to 15 minutes longer than the directions tell you, gray hair can be a little stubborn.
Each time you color your hair use a little more red and less brown and eventually you will have a full head of beautiful red hair.
I hope that helps! ~Natalie

You might be better off going to a salon, higher quality color may last longer; they could at least give you better advice

Definately stay away from the reds when you have a lot of grey hair as this wont cover the grey at all and will always go pink/orange !
Its best to try and go lighter gradually, as the darker you colour your hair, your roots will show so much more.
I would suggest that if your hair is short, try an all over lightish brown, if long, try the light brown with some blonde highlights.
Hope this helps !
