Why doesn't the gray color right when I have my hair dyed?

Every time I go to the salon and have my hair dyed, the grey roots always turn out lighter than the rest of my hair. I think it looks funny and it is very noticeable! Any cosmetologists out there that can help me? When I used to color my own hair, I never had that problem...it was all the same color!

I am also a cosmetologist. Your stylist might not be that keen with hair color, this is definitely a technical error. In fact, she (or he) should have recolored the roots, not send you out unhappy. Also, she may just be using the same formula from a year ago, and now it's not working because the ratio of grey has increased. You might even consider going lighter altogether, so the contrast to the incoming grey is lessened. Coarse hair has to be formulated 1 level darker than you think (it soaks up more hair color) and fine hair needs to be formulated 1 level lighter. Always use 20 volume developer with 50% or more grey hair.

They're more resistant. And they fade faster.

Gray hair, unfortunately, just holds pigment different. It's much like blonde hair in that if you try to dye it a dark color, it'll look much lighter than the desired color.

:( Afraid there's not much you can do. Perhaps ask your stylist if she can use a darker color than what you actually want on your roots.

Try a different salon- they need to be putting a gray resistance in your hair dye to keep the color longer. Also if your hair is a red color you might want to think about going brown with red highlights to control it. But it sounds like the salon doesn't know what they are doing...

I do my own, I use a root brush and section my hair in small sections and brush the color on the roots only.. leave on for 20 minutes, put the rest of the color all over and leave on for about 7-10 minutes, my roots are the same color as the rest. Good Luck..

i am a cosmetologyst..the reason it color lighter is beecause ur gray hair has lost all the melanin...melanin is the stuff in ur hait that ives it its color so the dye has nothing to grab onto...and also ur gray is lighter so in order to fix it instead of coloring ur whole head just do the gray it will look funny for a while but once all ur hair grows out it will be all one color or u can get a special dye just for gray hair
