How on earth do you get grey hairs?

I had my first grey hair and I am young!! the thing that stumped me was it was real coarse and very shiny grey. My hair is so fine like a babies so how does the grey hair not only change in color but also in the thickness? Please can you tell me why you get them or what causes them ??

Hair color is produced by melanin just as skin color is. As you get older, the melanin production of your hair follicles decreases and eventually stops, so that although you still grow hair, it is no longer colored. The texture is also different because of the changes to the hair follicle. And yes, this process starts when you are still young, in many cases!

Just aging can cause grey hair, but also too much stress.

stress and just the fact's of life. I just had my hair cut last week and I asked her why my gray was thicker and kinda kinky, she said that the gray hair's come in different than your hair is, go figure?

I had my first grey hair in my eyebrow when I was 12. I have also had grey hairs here and there ever since. My mothers hair went completely grey when she was 16. So I feel fortunate that was not the case for me. I am now in my early thirties and it seems every 2-3 weeks I have grey near my roots. It is totally heritary. When you lose pigment and also aging and perhaps stress can also be factors. Although myself I believe the stress is just a myth.

Hair looses the pigment and the age at which you get grey hair is highly individual. Some people beleive that taking multivitamins helps. My great grandmother died at 97 with about 6 grey hairs- my mother had a full head of white hair at 36. Yes - it changes texture as well- it is coarser and is more resistant to heat damage.

Over time, some hair follicles begin producing less and less melanin, the pigment that gives hair it's color. The hair still grows, but it comes out with little or no color (gray). The gray hairs also tend to be less supple, and more stiff or coarse, than the original hairs were.

It's typically a sign of aging, but a little graying can happen at any age, and can be caused by other conditions. Vitamin/mineral deficiencies, stress, and even tobacco smoking have all been linked to premature graying.

Once a hair follicle has gone gray, the only way to return it to it's original color is to dye it.
